FAQ

Which areas do you cover?

KTJ Photography offers family, newborn and branding photography in Northallerton, North Yorkshire. However, as I am not studio based, I travel and work within a much wider area for all types of photography. For family and newborn photography I cover Northallerton, Bedale, Richmond, Darlington, Thirsk, Middlesbrough, Harrogate, Ripon and the surrounding areas. For brand photography I cover all of North Yorkshire and the North East, and I am more than happy to travel further afield too!

How do I book a family photography session?

Please send me an email to kate@ktjphotography.co.uk, give me a call on 07912689978 or drop me a message on social media. We can then discuss a suitable time and date that will work for everyone.

What do we do if it rains on the day of our outdoor photoshoot?

This is always a possibility with photography in North Yorkshire so I will check the forecast in the run-up to your session and will make a decision the night before, or the morning of your shoot. If the weather is going to be unsuitable, we can reschedule your photoshoot at no extra cost. A cloudy or overcast day is fine for family photography, and is actually some of the most flattering lighting. We can also work around light showers if you are happy to go ahead. However, I would look to reschedule if heavy rain or strong wind was forecast.

What should we wear for a family photoshoot?

You don’t all need to wear matching outfits, but choosing a few coordinating colours can really make a difference to the look of your photographs. Consider the environment the photographs will be taken in when choosing your colours and type of clothing. Neutral colours are great for most outdoor portrait sessions. I would advise avoiding anything fluorescent or with logos on, and make sure not to wear too much green if your photos are to be taken somewhere with lots of grass or trees. Most important of all, you need to feel comfortable and confident in what you are wearing, and you need to feel like you!

Where will the photoshoot take place?

The most important thing is finding a location or place where you and your family feel happy, relaxed and comfortable. I have some favourite locations for photography in Northallerton, Bedale, Thirsk, Richmond and surrounding areas. Some of these include Cod Beck Reservoir near Osmotherley, Thorp Perrow Arboretum near Bedale, by the river in Richmond, Kiplin Hall between Northallerton and Richmond, and Sutton Bank near Thirsk. I always welcome new ideas too! Sessions generally take place first thing in the morning or later in the evening to take advantage of the best light.

I’m worried my children will misbehave!

I think this is a worry for most parents so I want to reassure you that I’ve seen it all before and that we will work at a pace that suits your little ones! Although my family photography sessions are usually around 1 hour long this is flexible, so If we need a break to recharge batteries or your children need a little more time to warm up, that’s absolutely fine. At the start of the photo shoot I will take photographs of the whole family together. I give a little direction to ensure you are in the most flattering light and position, then I let you be so that I can capture your family as naturally as possible. Hopefully you will be able to relax and just enjoy each other’s company while I take photos. Following this, I like to let the children run free! I will suggest some ideas, but the best photographs are often those that are spontaneous and capture children just playing and having fun. I am also a fully qualified and experienced primary school teacher so I can assure you I have lots of experience working with little ones!

What happens after the session?

Shortly after your North Yorkshire family photoshoot, I will be in touch with a link to your own online password-protected gallery. Here you will be able to view a selection of all the best images from the day. Once you let me know the numbers of the images you would like, these will be edited within 2 weeks and uploaded to a shared dropbox folder ready to use and print.

Can I choose more images than those included in my package?

Of course! Additional images from your gallery are available to purchase and a price list can be provided before or after your photoshoot.

Will the photos be in colour or black and white?

In your private online gallery there will be a mixture of colour and black and white images to choose from. The majority will be in colour but I will select some images that I think will work well in black and white. If you have any preferences for black and white or colour photography, please let me know and I can adapt your gallery accordingly.

What will the newborn session be like?

For those curled up sleepy baby photos, I will bring along a big beanbag to safely pose your little one on, as well as some baskets, blankets, wraps and other props. I will only position your baby in safe, comfortable and natural looking positions. I use natural light wherever possible so I may need to have a look around to find the best light (next to a window) to create beautiful images. Alternatively If you would prefer more natural lifestyle images around your home, just let me know and we can do this as well as, or instead of, the ‘posed’ newborn photography.

How can I prepare for my newborn’s photoshoot?

For those lovely sleeping newborn photos we need a sleepy baby! Making sure your home or room is lovely and warm will help with this. About half an hour before I arrive I ask that you feed your baby if possible, and dress them in easy to remove clothing or a blanket so we can avoid disrupting them if asleep. If you have any blankets, outfits or toys etc you would like to use, you can have these ready and I will be more than happy to include these in the images.

What age is best for newborn photography?

The best time to capture those sleepy newborn images is between 7 and 14 days old. This is typically when your little one will be the most settled and sleep the most deeply!

What if my newborn is already older than two weeks? Have I left it too late?

Although the ‘ideal’ time for newborn photographs is between 7 and 14 days old, it is still absolutely possible to get beautiful images of your baby at any age! An older baby may be more awake, fussier or want to be held in your arms, but this is all okay! My newborn sessions are relaxed, flexible and completely baby led with no pressure to hurry things along. Another lovely option for baby photos is to wait until they are sitting but not crawling at around 6 months old. This is a perfect time to capture their little characters as they begin to smile and interact with the camera.

When should I book my newborn session?

As the perfect time for newborn photography is around 1-2 weeks old I would recommend that you get in touch at least a month before your due date so I can pencil you in! When your little one arrives, I ask that you get back in touch as soon as possible to schedule a convenient date and time.

How long will my newborn photoshoot last?

Most newborn sessions will last between 2 and 3 hours. This is to allow for feeding, changing, sleeping and cuddling with no pressure to hurry things along.

What if I don’t have enough space or don’t want the newborn photoshoot in my home?

If you don’t feel your house is suitable or you would be more comfortable elsewhere, you are welcome to have your newborn shoot at my home in Brompton, Northallerton as an alternative.
